MLK Speaker & Social Activist for African Americans: MLK Week Speaker for Social Justice

Warm greetings from sunny Florida.

As a social activist for affirmative action, justice and corporate & governmental accountability I am delighted you are seeking a speaker for Dr. Martin Luther King day. I had the honor and distinct privilege of meeting Rev. Bernice King (MLK’s daughter) in southern California when she spoke at our church.

Since that time during the Bush administration I authored the book “United States of Arrogance” in which I cried out against the New York police murder of an unarmed African American groom at his bachelor party, the boot camp beating leading to the death of a 14 year old African American boy here in Florida and other forms of injustice throughout our country.

Because Dr. King was for peace and against the war in Vietnam, the FBI saw fit to spy on him and his wife up to four years after his assassination. Purposing to walk in the same spirit of brotherhood and endeavoring to live like a King, I stand against inhumane wars initiated without provocation far beyond our borders.

Nevertheless given I was raised by a retired Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army (my beloved grandfather) I understand the militaristic mindset and having encountered Islamic terrorism in my travels to 55 countries globally, recognize a place for self-defense and a time to confront evildoers… providing we who call ourselves “good”, “righteous” and “just” don’t follow out the same atrocities in war as our enemies we demonize and label evil.

Unfortunately our country did just that in Abu Ghraib, Hadith and elsewhere througout Iraq… killing, raping and torturing innocent people who did us no harm.

If Martin Luther King were alive today, he would continue to cry out against such injustice. For certainly there can be no peace with such cruel injustices being perpetrated against the human race. Meanwhile many call our country “the greatest on earth”, although most don’t have passports and have never traveled internationally to test their theories, nor to converse with those who we think to be our enemies.

The modernization of the world and global means of world travel has brought us closer together economically, technologically and via our entertainment. Yet the military industrial complex continues to strive to make enemies in foreign theaters of war to keep the profitable agenda of war afloat… and sometimes the U.S. dollar itself lest OPEC and oil rich countries seek an alternative currency when they sell their petro to gas guzzling and wasteful countries such as ourselves.

Crude politics, media propaganda, warmongering and demonizing those we’ve never met is the order of the day. I pray those who seek to live like a King won’t be bamboozled by the drunkeness and lethargy in our most comfortable and obese society.

My only regret is that the color of my skin is not of African descent, which would seemingly make it more easy for me to gain access to speak to my African American brothers and sisters. Nevertheless as Moses said to Joshua, “Once you have experienced deliverance and entered your inheritance, fight for your brothers!” (Joshua 1) This I shall wholeheartedly do, desiring to live like a King and be a liberator in similar fashion.

Nevertheless I have been to Africa five times, having slept in a tent in the bush within war torn countries for months and been so deep into the bush where electricity doesn’t exist and some had never before seen a white man. Thus I intimately know the plight of the black man abroad and at home (the latter through my work in the inner city as a minister and through prison ministry among inmates).

Emancipation legally has come, but for transformation to occur illumination within and the fight of faith must be fought individually to ensure progression to the promised land Dr. King saw and dreamed of for us all.

Had Dr. King and other Civil RIghts leaders remained silent, everybody in America would be enslaved regardless of the color of our skin. Because where oppression exists in shades and degrees, it can bleed and spead to burden all of humanity.

I wish for you and your students the heart, strength, inspiration, fire and burning desire of Dr. King to continue to carry the torch of light in a dark and desperate world thirsting for prophetic leaders full of courage and boldness lift up their voices and challenge the status quo.

Sincerely,

Paul F Davis
